I used to worry when taking my pups to the vet at 8 weeks old to get shots.  You see, the dose they give to a toy breed is the same  dose they give for ALL breeds for the puppy shots.  Everything else is done by weight but this is such a huge money maker for vets that they don't want customers to know how many vaccines hurt more than help.   My pups would come home lethargic, then the vaccines made them loose their appetite which is when hypoglycemia set in and that can kill a puppy fast.  A RED light went on and I started to investigate.  In all of my research  over the years we changed our protocol here and our babies are NOT over vaccinated....my babies are extremely healthy.  There are a couple of vaccines that we do not recommend as they have killed toy breeds and my guarantee states such.
A situation happened a few years ago.  A dog that was brought here brought in kennel cough.  I was very upset because it is very contageous and can last for weeks...... I know that  kennel cough must run it's course with vets giving pricey antibiotics...but I quickly purchased a holistic remedy and low and behold, this cough was gone in 2 days, at the price of only about $15.  DO YOU KNOW WHAT THIS WOULD HAVE COST AT A WESTERN VET....A LOT!!!

Do yourself and your  new furry friend a kindness and investigate yourself...FOOD is also critical, please read about it here on my site!!

Hello betty,

Re: A Vaccine Petition to Sign, Reasons NOT to Vaccinate

A cheery hello to yourself and your furry friends.

Your words of support and prayers keep coming in.

Thanks again to EVERYONE. It does make a big difference
to know that I am part of a larger community that cares.

And as I said earlier, I'll definitely tell you all the
results as soon as I find out.

A reader sent me a link to a new petition on Pet
Vaccines. This is the single most important health issue
facing our dogs and cats today.

First..Here is the link below is to sign petition for safer
vaccinations for our companion animals.

I wanted to give you some additional information on Dog and Cat
Vaccines, and I found some fabulous stuff at Catherine O'Driscolls
site, Canine Health Concern.

She is eminently qualified to write on this topic, and she has
authored 2 books on this topic.

'Shock to the System', and 'What Vets DON'T tell
You About Vaccines'.

She is in Scotland, hence her reference to 'America'

Here are her answers to some very common Vaccine Questions...

Q: Should I vaccinate my dog or cat every year?

A: No. There is absolutely no scientific justification for annual
vaccination. According to Dr Ronald D Schultz, head of pathobiology
at Wisconsin University, and the world's most eminent expert on
canine and feline immunology, "once immunity to a virus exists,
it persists for years or for the life of an animal". This fact,
supported by further duration of immunity studies, has been
accepted by veterinary bodies in America and Australia. The
consensus is that, if you wish to vaccinate your dog, then he
should have puppy shots followed by one shot after six months
of age, and then no further shots are required.

Q: I thought vaccines were safe - what are the adverse effects?

A: Inflammatory ('itis') diseases in dogs and cats are becoming
increasingly common, due largely to vaccines. Vaccines contain
modified live viruses; formaldehyde (a cancer-causing preservative
used to embalm corpses); mercury and aluminium salts (both toxins);
serum (blood products); and other worrying substances. The medical
and veterinary professions readily acknowledge that both humans and
animals can have allergic reactions to serum. But add all the other
components, and it's no wonder some individuals have allergic reactions.

In addition, vaccines are often cultivated on dog and cat brains and
kidneys, on hamsters, on monkeys, and on chick embryos. If any of
these animals' tissues are inadequately removed from the vaccine,
the patient can have a hypersensitivity reaction to them. The words
'hypersensitivity', 'allergy', and 'inflammation' are interchangeable.
Sometimes the hypersensitivity reaction is so severe that the patient
must be immediately injected with adrenaline or they will die.

Because vaccines are generally injected straight into the bloodstream,
components can be carried around the body. Depending upon the animal's
genetic predisposition, the allergic reaction could manifest as inflammation
of the brain, inflammation of the digestive system, inflammation of the bones
and joints - in fact, any of the many inflammatory conditions. This is why
scientists have written and produced scientific papers that link vaccines
in with brain damage, epilepsy, behavioural problems, colitis, arthritis,
thyroid disease, heart failure, kidney failure, cancer and more.

The practice of cultivating vaccines on animal tissue has also been called
into question. The Salk Polio vaccine illustrated the dangers of this when
it was discovered that it was contaminated with a range of monkey retroviruses.
SV40, a monkey retrovirus found in the Salk vaccine, has been found at the
cancer sites of people who received this vaccine. Worryingly, it has also
been found at the cancer sites of their children. SV40 switches off the part
of the DNA that protects from cancer.

SIV, another monkey retrovirus, was also a contaminant in the Salk vaccine.
SIV and HIV are closely related viruses, and independent scientists have
traced the emergence of AIDS to mass polio vaccination in the Belgian Congo
and amongst male homosexuals in New York who were given the vaccine in an
attempt to protect against genital herpes (however strange this might sound!).

Similarly, an avian (bird) retrovirus has been found in leukaemia patients,
and it is thought that the retrovirus came from the MMR vaccine. Distemper
and measles are virtually identical viruses, and both vaccines are cultivated
on chick embryos.

Where did parvovirus come from in the 1970s, killing thousands of dogs?
Scientists have been quoted as saying that it was a cross-species disease,
created by a vaccine manufacturer who cultivated the distemper vaccine on
cats infected with feline enteritis. The first vaccine for this new disease
was a stopgap: the feline enteritis vaccine. The disease occurred simultaneously
around the world. Naturally occurring diseases spread slowly, but vaccine
manufacturers send their products out in batches around the world, easily
creating a worldwide epidemic.

By looking at scientific data from both human and animal-based research,
we are able to say that vaccines are proven to cause inflammatory and immune-
mediated diseases. The UK vet Christopher Day observed that, where the start
date of an illness in his patients is known, around 80% of patients started
to be ill within three months of vaccination. CHC put this theory to the test
by inviting pet owners to complete a short questionnaire.

There were over 4,000 dogs in the survey. We asked, if your dog is ill, when
did he become ill in relation to the vaccine? We have been astounded by the
results so far.

91% of Ataxia cases occurred within three months of a vaccine event

81% of dogs who had tumours at their vaccine sites, first developed the
tumours within three months of being vaccinated

78.6% of dogs with encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) first
developed the condition within three months of being vaccinated

73.1% of epileptic dogs first became epileptic within three months of
being vaccinated

65.9% of dogs with colitis developed the condition within that first
three months

64.9% of dogs with behavioural problems started to be a problem within
three months of vaccination

61.5% of dogs developed liver failure within three months of being
vaccinated

The above figures were chosen at random from our findings to illustrate
the principle to you: vaccines may be protecting our dogs against viral
disease, but they are doing this at a very high price. If vaccination
had no bearing on subsequent illness, only 25% of dogs should become ill
in each three-month period.

Q: Is CHC saying that we should leave our dogs unprotected against horrible
diseases like distemper and parvovirus?

A: No, certainly not. In fact, we would say you should not leave your dogs
unprotected. But you can minimise the risks.

Firstly, if you choose to continue vaccinating, you could have puppy shots
and possibly the first year's booster, and leave it at that. This is the
advice being given now by veterinary colleges in America.

Secondly, you could use the homoeopathic alternative instead. This has been
used by many breeders and show people for years. Reports indicate that
homoeopathically protected dogs are far healthier than vaccinated dogs.
There are several scientific studies showing that the homoeopathic alternative
works.

Vaccine manufacturers are currently trying to tell us that dogs need annual
boosters against leptospirosis, which is a bacterin rather than a virus.
However, many eminent scientists say that this vaccine should actually be
withdrawn as it is not very protective, and it is the vaccine most associated
with adverse reactions.

The kennel cough virus mutates (like the flu) so you can't guarantee
permanent immunity from the vaccine. However, scientific research has
shown that the homoeopathic nosode is more protective against kennel
cough than the vaccine - and it's safer.

Q: My vet tells me that you are scaremongering and that I should continue
to vaccinate every year. I don't know what to do.

A: Vets, however well-meaning, are educated in colleges that rely upon
vaccine and pharmaceutical companies for funding in the form of sponsorship,
research grants, scholarships and bursaries. Colleges are reliant upon big
business for funding, and few people are willing to bite the hand that feeds
them. Vets' education with regard to vaccines tends to stop beyond "do it".

Our knowledge about immunity has improved greatly over the past five years.
Some of the information coming to light about vaccines will present an
ethical and economic challenge to veterinarians. But your pet deserves to
come first, over and above any such challenges.

If your vet says annual vaccination is necessary, ask him if he has heard
of the research coming out of America, and the advice that annual vaccination
is unnecessary. If he has heard of this research, he cannot dismiss your
questions. If he has not heard of it, then he lacks the knowledge to advise.

Finally, your dog looks at you with love and trust in his eyes, not at a
stranger in a white coat. It is vitally important that you do as much as you
can to understand the facts. Please don't do as I did and allow your dogs to
die before you discover the truth. I wish you and your animal friends many
happy and healthy years together.

P.S. The more I learn about Vaccines, the
less I want to give them.

Hello Dedicated Pet Owners.

I am currently up to my eye balls in Vaccine info
in preparing the next newsletter, and audio for
my membership site.

First, there is SO MUCH conflicting
information on this issue..It really is
difficult to know exactly WHAT to do.

Different experts are advising different things..

Some are BIG vaccine adv ocates, while others
say to NOT give anything.

I am of the belief that you should give
ONLY the vaccines that are necessary, as
infrequently as possible.

You need to be aware of the diseases in
your area, and you need to know if the vaccine
for the particular disease even works..

Take for instance Leptospirosis.

Leptospirosis, a contagious disease affecting both
animals and humans and spread by infection with a
bacterial pathogen called Leptospira, may result
in chronic liver and kidney disease and fatality
in the dog. Over the past 30 years, preventative
vaccination against two of the most common Leptospires,
L. canicola and L. icterohaemorrhagiae, have nearly
eradicated clinical disease associated with these
strains among the inoculated population.

Though not without potential side effects associated
with allergic reactions to inoculant in some dogs,
the risks of not vaccinating fo r Leptospirosis once far
outweighed risks of vaccine-reaction.

In recent years, however, new outbreaks of Leptospirosis
have been reported in the population of vaccinated dogs.
Clinical evidence now suggests that these new cases are
associated with the once, less-common Leptospires for
which current vaccines do not protect against.

In light of these findings, the process of vaccinating
dogs with the current Leptospirosis vaccines is being
seriously questioned.

In other words, the vaccine, which can cause a WHOLE
HOST of side effects, is NOT EVEN protective.

P.S. To get the inside scoop on ALL the vaccines that
HARM and the vaccines that HELP, you need to become

Below is a letter from one of my customers:

Hi Sherry. It's me again. Sorry to bother you again,
but once again I must share my appreciation for you.
Yesterday I finally bought the book by Dr Pitcairn you
recommended. Now mind you, before even buying the
book, I made up my mind to go totally holistic with
Moses. The first thing he writes about is the old
couple who brought their dog, Tiny, in to see him.
Tiny had lost much of his fur, like our Scottie had.
He had an oily, smelly residue on his skin, like
Scottie. His owners were at wits end because of all
of the things they had tried to help him never made
much of a difference, just like Scottie. Like them,
we had tried sooooo many different medications,
ointments, medicated shampoos, steriods, cortisone,
for years, and like them, never saw much of an
improvement. Dr Pitcairn suggested taking Tiny off
commercial food and feed him chicken, beef ,veggies,
and some supplements. When the couple brought Tiny
back in a month later there was noticeable
improvement, and Tiny was a much happier dog as were
his owners. Once again, it brought tears to my eyes.
If only I had been aware of the holistic approach,
even 2 yrs ago, it may have made a difference for
Scottie's severe allergies, his quality of iife, and
who knows, he may still even be here with us. I
realize I can't punish myself for not knowing at
better with Scottie. But because of what Scottie went
through, the heartache it put us through all of those
years, and not to mention the 10's of thousands of
dollars we paid out trying to help him, I stand even
firmer in my belief, Holistic is the only way to go.
Once again, I have YOU to thank for this.

I made up my mind last night, I am going to write
letters to Scottie's regular vet, his dermatologist,
and his internist. In those letters I am going to
tell them we are getting a new puppy, Moses. Although
I appreciate all they tried to do for Scottie, with
Moses, I am going totally holistic in all of his care.
Maybe if enough pet owners speak out about this,
maybe the western vets and all the specialists will
realize maybe the holistic way is worth looking into.
Once we get Moses, I also intend to write a letter of
reference for your website. In that letter I will
also explain what I just got through telling you.

I feel like I should go on the street corners, get up
on my soap box, telling all dog owners out there what
they may unknowingly be doing to their dogs. I know I
won't do that, but have already been sharing all of
this with family and friends who own pets. It will be
their decision on if they change, but at least they
will be made aware of the situation.

Yesterday, as I was walking into the pet store to get
some supplies for Moses, a young lady was walking out
with the cutest little 8 wk old puppy on a leash. I
couldn't resist stopping her and playing with her
puppy. She was part shih tzu and part bichon. The
first thing I wanted to ask the owner, was "WHAT ARE
YOU FEEDING YOUR NEW BABY???", "DON'T GIVE HER ALL
THOSE SHOTS THE VET WILL TELL YOU IS REQUIRED"! Of
course I didn't want the poor thing to look at me like
I was some kind of nut she was encountering, but that
is what I feel like doing anytime I see someone with
their pet.

I'm not one to get hell bent on different causes. I'm
sure a good part of the reason I now feel so strongly
on the subject is because of our love for Scottie.
seeing and living through along with him, all he went
through with all of his health issues. And it is
because of our love for him, and the grief we suffered
over losing him, that I will continue to tell anyone
willing to listen about what I have learned from YOU,
and will direct them to your website to find out
firsthand.

I don't mean to get all sappy with you Sherry. I just
want you to know, how MUCH I appreciate all of the
time, love and effort, you have put into bringing so
many healthy babies into the lives of the people who
adopt one of yours. Your web site is so informative
and educational, I can't imagine the time you put into
that as well. Please know how much you have helped at
least one new family to do what is best for the sweet,
new, little furball, that will soon be a big part of
their lives.

Sincerely,

Rose

Dear Sher,,
I purchased a puppy from you and Bambi is now almost 2 years old.  I wish I had listened to you about vaccines at that time and decided  to write this  to you because of what my Bambi went through.
In the last year, Bambi has had severe allergies, severe ear infections and also some seizures.  After many vet bills we found a wonderful holistic doctor.  Seems all of the vaccines that our WESTERN vet insisted on is the reason Bambi is not as healthy as she should be.  She was a gorgeous and healthy little girl that you gave us UNTIL the vaccines were given.  I have also learned that over vaccinating is the reason for cancer, allergies, liver and heart conditions and many more ailments in dogs and cats as well.  I am just sick about this.  I want you to please use this letter to help all of your new owners to give vaccinations a LOT of thought.  Vaccines if over done causes many things.  My holistic vet is helping Bambi a great deal, but if I had it to do over again, l never ever would give a new puppy these vaccines again.  After reading all of your information Sherry, it is evident that you have done your homework and only  care about the well being of your darling puppies.  Hat's off to you girl.....I wish I had listened because if I had, I am certain as my holistic vet is that Bambi would NOT have had these problems.   Western vets put so much pressure on the new owners but it's not for the health of the animals but for their bank account.   Like you said Sher, less is more....less vaccines means a much more healthy beloved pet for many years to come...I most definitely have learned the hard way.
Bless you and what you do !

Science of Vaccine Damage

by Catherine O'Driscoll
(posted with permission)
A team at Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine conducted several studies (1,2) to determine if vaccines can cause changes in the immune system of dogs that might lead to life-threatening immune-mediated diseases. They obviously conducted this research because concern already existed. It was sponsored by the Haywood Foundation which itself was looking for evidence that such changes in the human immune system might also be vaccine induced. It found the evidence.
The vaccinated, but not the non-vaccinated, dogs in the Purdue studies developed autoantibodies to many of their own biochemicals, including fibronectin, laminin, DNA, albumin, cytochrome C, cardiolipin and collagen.
This means that the vaccinated dogs -- ”but not the non-vaccinated dogs”-- were attacking their own fibronectin, which is involved in tissue repair, cell multiplication and growth, and differentiation between tissues and organs in a living organism.
The vaccinated Purdue dogs also developed autoantibodies to laminin, which is involved in many cellular activities including the adhesion, spreading, differentiation, proliferation and movement of cells. Vaccines thus appear to be capable of removing the natural intelligence of cells.
Autoantibodies to cardiolipin are frequently found in patients with the serious disease systemic lupus erythematosus and also in individuals with other autoimmune diseases. The presence of elevated anti-cardiolipin antibodies is significantly associated with clots within the heart or blood vessels, in poor blood clotting, haemorrhage, bleeding into the skin, foetal loss and neurological conditions.
The Purdue studies also found that vaccinated dogs were developing autoantibodies to their own collagen. About one quarter of all the protein in the body is collagen. Collagen provides structure to our bodies, protecting and supporting the softer tissues and connecting them with the skeleton. It is no wonder that Canine Health Concern's 1997 study of 4,000 dogs showed a high number of dogs developing mobility problems shortly after they were vaccinated (noted in my 1997 book, What Vets Don't Tell You About Vaccines).
Perhaps most worryingly, the Purdue studies found that the vaccinated dogs had developed autoantibodies to their own DNA. Did the alarm bells sound? Did the scientific community call a halt to the vaccination program? No. Instead, they stuck their fingers in the air, saying more research is needed to ascertain whether vaccines can cause genetic damage. Meanwhile, the study dogs were found good homes, but no long-term follow-up has been conducted. At around the same time, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Vaccine-Associated Feline Sarcoma Task Force initiated several studies to find out why 160,000 cats each year in the USA develop terminal cancer at their vaccine injection sites.(3) The fact that cats can get vaccine-induced cancer has been acknowledged by veterinary bodies around the world, and even the British Government acknowledged it through its Working Group charged with the task of looking into canine and feline vaccines(4) following pressure from Canine Health Concern. What do you imagine was the advice of the AVMA Task Force, veterinary bodies and governments? "Carry on vaccinating until
we find out why vaccines are killing cats, and which cats are most likely to die."
In America, in an attempt to mitigate the problem, they're vaccinating cats in the tail or leg so they can amputate when cancer appears. Great advice if it's not your cat amongst the hundreds of thousands on the "oops" list.
But other species are okay - right? Wrong. In August 2003, the Journal of Veterinary Medicine carried an Italian study which showed that dogs also develop vaccine-induced cancers at their injection sites.(5) We already know that vaccine-site cancer is a possible sequel to human vaccines, too, since the Salk polio vaccine was said to carry a monkey retrovirus (from cultivating the vaccine on monkey organs) that produces inheritable cancer. The monkey retrovirus SV40 keeps turning up in human cancer sites.
It is also widely acknowledged that vaccines can cause a fast-acting, usually fatal, disease called autoimmune haemolytic anaemia (AIHA). Without treatment, and frequently with treatment, individuals can die in agony within a matter of days. Merck, itself a multinational vaccine manufacturer, states in The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy that autoimmune haemolytic anaemia may be caused by modified live-virus vaccines, as do Tizard's Veterinary Immunology (4th edition) and the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine.(6) The British Government's Working Group, despite being staffed by vaccine-industry consultants who say they are independent, also acknowledged this fact. However, no one warns the pet owners before their animals are subjected to an unnecessary booster, and very few owners are told why after their pets die of AIHA.
A Wide Range of Vaccine-induced Diseases
We also found some worrying correlations between vaccine events and the onset of arthritis in our 1997 survey. Our concerns were compounded by research in the human field.
The New England Journal of Medicine, for example, reported that it is possible to isolate the rubella virus from affected joints in children vaccinated against rubella. It also told of the isolation of viruses from the peripheral blood of women with prolonged arthritis following vaccination.(7)
Then, in 2000, CHC's findings were confirmed by research which showed that polyarthritis and other diseases like amyloidosis, which affects organs in dogs, were linked to the combined vaccine given to dogs.(8) There is a huge body of research, despite the paucity of funding from the vaccine industry, to confirm that vaccines can cause a wide range of brain and central nervous system damage. Merck itself states in its Manual that vaccines (i.e., its own products) can cause encephalitis: brain inflammation/damage. In some cases, encephalitis involves lesions in the brain and throughout the central nervous system. Merck states that "examples are the encephalitides following measles, chickenpox, rubella, smallpox vaccination, vaccinia, and many other less well defined viral infections".
When the dog owners who took part in the CHC survey reported that their dogs developed short attention spans, 73.1% of the dogs did so within three months of a vaccine event. The same percentage of dogs was diagnosed with epilepsy within three months of a shot (but usually within days). We also found that 72.5% of dogs that were considered by their owners to be nervous and of a worrying disposition, first exhibited these traits within the three-month post-vaccination period.
I would like to add for the sake of Oliver, my friend who suffered from paralysed rear legs and death shortly after a vaccine shot, that "paresis" is listed in Merck's Manual as a symptom of encephalitis. This is defined as muscular weakness of a neural (brain) origin which involves partial or incomplete paralysis, resulting from lesions at any level of the descending pathway from the brain. Hind limb paralysis is one of the potential consequences. Encephalitis, incidentally, is a disease that can manifest across the scale from mild to severe and can also cause sudden death.
Organ failure must also be suspected when it occurs shortly after a vaccine event. Dr Larry Glickman, who spearheaded the Purdue research into post-vaccination biochemical changes in dogs, wrote in a letter to Cavalier Spaniel breeder Bet Hargreaves:
"Our ongoing studies of dogs show that following routine vaccination, there is a significant rise in the level of antibodies dogs produce against their own tissues. Some of these antibodies have been shown to target the thyroid gland, connective tissue such as that found in the valves of the heart, red blood cells, DNA, etc. I do believe that the heart conditions in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels could be the end result of repeated immunisations by vaccines containing tissue culture contaminants that cause a progressive immune response directed at connective tissue in the heart valves. The clinical manifestations would be more pronounced in dogs that have a genetic predisposition [although] the findings should be generally applicable to all dogs regardless of their breed."

I must mention here that Dr Glickman believes that vaccines are a necessary evil, but that safer vaccines need to be developed.
Meanwhile, please join the queue to place your dog, cat, horse and child on the Russian roulette wheel because a scientist says you should.
Vaccines Stimulate an Inflammatory Response
The word "allergy" is synonymous with "sensitivity" and "inflammation". It should, by rights, also be synonymous with the word "vaccination". This is what vaccines do: they sensitise (render allergic)an individual in the process of forcing them to develop antibodies to fight a disease threat. In other words, as is acknowledged and accepted, as part of the vaccine process the body will respond with inflammation. This may be apparently temporary or it may be longstanding.
Holistic doctors and veterinarians have known this for at least 100 years.
They talk about a wide range of inflammatory or "-itis" diseases which arise shortly after a vaccine event. Vaccines, in fact, plunge many individuals into an allergic state. Again, this is a disorder that ranges from mild all the way through to the suddenly fatal. Anaphylactic shock is the culmination: it's where an individual has a massive allergic reaction to a vaccine and will die within minutes if adrenaline or its equivalent is not administered.
There are some individuals who are genetically not well placed to withstand the vaccine challenge. These are the people (and animals are "people", too) who have inherited faulty B and T cell function. B and T cells are components within the immune system which identify foreign invaders and destroy them, and hold the invader in memory so that they cannot cause future harm. However, where inflammatory responses are concerned, the immune system overreacts and causes unwanted effects such as allergies and other
inflammatory conditions.
Merck warns in its Manual that patients with, or from families with, B and/or T cell immunodeficiencies should not receive live-virus vaccines due to the risk of severe or fatal infection. Elsewhere, it lists features of B and T cell immunodeficiencies as food allergies, inhalant allergies, eczema, dermatitis, neurological deterioration and heart disease. To translate, people with these conditions can die if they receive live-virus vaccines. Their immune systems are simply not competent enough to guarantee a healthy reaction to the viral assault from modified live-virus vaccines.
Modified live-virus (MLV) vaccines replicate in the patient until an immune response is provoked. If a defence isn't stimulated, then the vaccine continues to replicate until it gives the patient the very disease it was intending to prevent.
Alternatively, a deranged immune response will lead to inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, pancreatitis, colitis, encephalitis and any number of autoimmune diseases such as cancer and leukaemia, where the body attacks its own cells.
A new theory, stumbled upon by Open University student Gary Smith, explains what holistic practitioners have been saying for a very long time. Here is what a few of the holistic vets have said in relation to their patients:
Dr Jean Dodds: "Many veterinarians trace the present problems with allergic and immunologic diseases to the introduction of MLV vaccines..." (9)
Christina Chambreau, DVM: "Routine vaccinations are probably the worst thing that we do for our animals. They cause all types of illnesses, but not directly to where we would relate them definitely to be caused by the vaccine." (10)
Martin Goldstein, DVM: "I think that vaccines...are leading killers of dogs and cats in America today."
Dr Charles E. Loops, DVM: "Homoeopathic veterinarians and other holistic practitioners have maintained for some time that vaccinations do more harm than they provide benefits." (12)
Mike Kohn, DVM: "In response to this [vaccine] violation, there have been increased autoimmune diseases (allergies being one component), epilepsy, neoplasia [tumours], as well as behavioural problems in small animals." (13)
A Theory on Inflammation
Gary Smith explains what observant healthcare practitioners have been saying for a very long time, but perhaps they've not understood why their observations led them to say it. His theory, incidentally, is causing a huge stir within the inner scientific sanctum. Some believe that his theory could lead to a cure for many diseases including cancer. For me, it explains why the vaccine process is inherently questionable.
Gary was learning about inflammation as part of his studies when he struck upon a theory so extraordinary that it could have implications for the treatment of almost every inflammatory disease -- including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, rheumatoid arthritis and even HIV and AIDS.
Gary's theory questions the received wisdom that when a person gets ill, the inflammation that occurs around the infected area helps it to heal. He claims that, in reality, inflammation prevents the body from recognising a foreign substance and therefore serves as a hiding place for invaders. The inflammation occurs when at-risk cells produce receptors called All (known as angiotensin II type I receptors). He says that while At1 has a balancing receptor, At2, which is supposed to switch off the inflammation, in most diseases this does not happen.
"Cancer has been described as the wound that never heals," he says. "All successful cancers are surrounded by inflammation. Commonly this is thought to be the body's reaction to try to fight the cancer, but this is not the case.
"The inflammation is not the body trying to fight the infection. It is actually the virus or bacteria deliberately causing inflammation in order to hide from the immune system [author's emphasis]." (14)
If Gary is right, then the inflammatory process so commonly stimulated by vaccines is not, as hitherto assumed, a necessarily acceptable sign. Instead, it could be a sign that the viral or bacterial component, or the adjuvant (which, containing foreign protein, is seen as an invader by the immune system), in the vaccine is winning by stealth.
If Gary is correct in believing that the inflammatory response is not protective but a sign that invasion is taking place under cover of darkness, vaccines are certainly not the friends we thought they were. They are undercover assassins working on behalf of the enemy, and vets and medical doctors are unwittingly acting as collaborators. Worse, we animal guardians and parents are actually paying doctors and vets to unwittingly betray our loved ones.
Potentially, vaccines are the stealth bomb of the medical world. They are used to catapult invaders inside the castle walls where they can wreak havoc, with none of us any the wiser. So rather than experiencing frank viral diseases such as the 'flu, measles, mumps and rubella (and, in the case of dogs, parvovirus and distemper), we are allowing the viruses to win anyway - but with cancer, leukaemia and other inflammatory or autoimmune (self-attacking) diseases taking their place.
The Final Insult
All 27 veterinary schools in North America have changed their protocols for vaccinating dogs and cats along the following lines; (15) however, vets in practice are reluctant to listen to these changed protocols and official veterinary bodies in the UK and other countries are ignoring the following facts.
Dogs' and cats' immune systems mature fully at six months. If modified live-virus vaccine is giver after six months of age, it produces immunity, which is good for the life of the pet. If another MLV vaccine is given a year later, the antibodies from the first vaccine neutralise the antigens of the second vaccine and there is little or no effect. The litre is no "boosted", nor are more memory cells induced.
Not only are annual boosters unnecessary, but they subject the pet to potential risks such as allergic reactions and immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia.
In plain language, veterinary schools in America, plus the American Veterinary Medical Association, have looked at studies to show how long vaccines last and they have concluded and announced that annual vaccination is unnecessary.(16-19)
Further, they have acknowledged that vaccines are not without harm. Dr Ron Schultz, head of pathobiology at Wisconsin University and a leading light in this field, has been saying this politely to his veterinary colleagues since the 1980s. I've been saying it for the past 12 years. But change is so long in coming and, in the meantime, hundreds of thousands of animals are dying every year - unnecessarily.
The good news is that thousands of animal lovers (but not enough) have heard what we've been saying. Canine Health Concern members around the world use real food as Nature's supreme disease preventative, eschewing processed pet food, and minimise the vaccine risk. Some of us, myself included, have chosen not to vaccinate our pets at all. Our reward is healthy and long-lived dogs.
It has taken but one paragraph to tell you the good and simple news. The gratitude I feel each day, when I embrace my healthy dogs, stretches from the centre of the Earth to the Universe and beyond.

Below is an email just received,  this may help you in your decisions regarding vaccines....

Hi, I am currently at work, but wanted to let you know that I read your information about the vaccinations and recently had a problem with our Abby. She had a terrible reaction when she had her immunizations. The vet had me bring her back in and he feels she is sensitive to the Lepto and does not recommend it for her any more frequent than every 3 yrs. It was a very scary experience that I hope to not have to revisit. She stared at the wall, couldn't walk, cried when you picked her up. It lasted for about 24 hrs. I didn't know about smaller breeds being more sensitive to the immunizations, and learned something new.
Health! New Vaccination Protocols
Veterinary schools are changing the way they think about annual vaccinations.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This time of year has most of us  worried about what present goes to whom and whether we can find enough folding chairs to fit around that oh-so-stretched-out dining table. We don't usually have a lot of time to pay much mind to our dogs other than our usual routines: food, water, a little bit of grooming and a quick run out in the nippy air for bathroom break.
This year, it might be time to think about a little more than just roasted chestnuts, sparkling tinsel, big holiday packages and a Milkbone for Fido. As we head into 2009, your next vet visit may be something of a holiday AND a gift for both you and your dog: No annual vaccinations needed!
What? No booster shots for distemper, parvo, rabies and the like? Aren't we always supposed to get our dogs their shots because aren't they always getting into dirty, gross and messy situations that might expose them to a potentially deadly diseases? Apparently, the new answer is loud and clear: “NO!”
Changes at the Veterinary Schools

As of 2005, all United States schools of veterinary medicine are now teaching that dog (and cat) immunology is more complicated and more resilient than was previously thought. In fact, the science shows that giving vaccines too often can actually be harmful and injure the natural immune response that our pets have.
The veterinary schools are telling our new DVMs - and updating our older ones - that they should no longer routinely vaccinate all dogs and cats with all core vaccines every year. They should be receiving them in a pattern that mimics how the immune system develops and builds itself…and then be revaccinated only once every three years.
That's right. Once every three years!

canine parvovirus  Vaccines Work How?

Vaccines work in mammals by introducing bacteria, parasites and/or viruses that are either dead or modified so they cannot reproduce inside us. Once we get a vaccine, our white blood cells start attacking the foreign invaders. Since they are either dead or have been rendered harmless, the foreign invaders don't have any ability to fight back, replicate and overwhelm the body's defenses. Out immune system imprints with a memory of these invaders and how it fought them, adding a special response to its repertoire specifically aimed at the particular kind of virus or bacteria. The next time that attacker shows up, the body is then better prepared to fight off the invader. Antibodies - the imprinted memory response mammals create from meeting foreign invaders - are the weapons needed to keep communicable diseases at bay in our dogs.
Too Many Soldiers Fighting the Same War!

Is an annual revaccination too much of a good thing? Can our attempts at preventing communicable diseases in our best furry friends be backfiring on us?
Unfortunately, the answers to both seem to be, “YES!”
On the forefront of this issue, Dr. W. Jean Dodds, DVM, is a California-based veterinarian who has been a proponent of changing dog and cat vaccine protocols for at least a decade. Practically her entire 40-plus year career has been dedicated to studying animal immunology. After seeing many companion animal patients developing problems that were auto-immune related—diseases caused by the body's own defenses attacking itself—she and others began intensely studying how our pets handled vaccines and whether their immune responses were being compromised by being over stimulated with too much vaccine.

What she and her colleagues have found has become the basis of the new vaccine protocols. When introduced too often, some dogs and cats have reactions that make the immune system start attacking itself and impairing its response to certain diseases. As a yearly vaccine, the research shows core
Dr. Jean Dodds
annual booster shots of distemper, rabies and the like have no effect on boosting immunity if the shots have been given before. In fact, the additional booster shots may have made our pets more likely to be sick with something else like hypothyroidism, which can be autoimmune related.
Why? The immunity for most vaccines may last anywhere from 6-10 years, depending on the exposure to viruses and bacteria, the general health of the animal, the breed and the individual dog or cat itself. Given the right set of circumstances, if you keep sending in soldiers to fight the same enemy over and over, you may cause them to flip and attack the body instead.
The New Schedule is…

Thus, Dr. Dodds' studies have convinced the veterinary community to change the protocols for vaccinating our companion animals. While there are on-going debates about the efficacy of timing and changing the types of vaccines, right now the core vaccines for dogs are distemper, parvo, adenovirus and rabies.
Dogs, according to the new standards, should be vaccinated at 6, 9, 12 and 16 weeks with distemper, parvo and adenovirus vaccines. They should then be vaccinated again one year after the 16th-week vaccine. The interval then moves to once every three years.
While your state or local law may require you to vaccinate annually for rabies, the new protocol is a rabies shot at 16 weeks, a booster one year later, and a follow-up once every three years after that. You should follow the law and maintain your rabies vaccines accordingly. However, you should also make your vet aware that over-vaccinating is a concern, and that you'd like to know whether they have any information on how the laws in your area can be changed or affected by these new vaccine protocols. Your state health department and/or department of agriculture may not be aware of the new studies showing the need to amend pet animal vaccine schedules.
Other vaccines…

There are other vaccines our dogs are often treated with, and these may or may not be appropriate for your dog. These are bordetella/parainfluenza (kennel cough), lyme, leptospirosis, corona, and giardia. All are contingent on the area in which you live, the health of your dog, its activities, local and/or state law, and your dog's breed. Lepto, for instance, is a major cause of anaphylactic shock in many smaller and toy breed dogs and should NOT be given without very good reason. Be sure to talk to your vet to get an understanding as to why and how often they believe one of these other vaccines should be given. If you don't feel comfortable with it and you know of no good reason to do so, the science says you're probably better off NOT vaccinating. But, always consult your vet to make your choice.
Don't Neglect Fido—Do Go to the Doctor Regularly

Just because annual vaccines may soon be coming to an end for your buddy doesn't mean you should forget about an annual check-up. All dogs need to continue to maintain an annual check-up schedule with a licensed vet to maintain optimal health.
The Future…

Even as we speak, ever more research by Dr. Dodds and others like her is proving the idea that vaccines may need to be given at different intervals and in different combinations. Some research suggests that puppies don't benefit from any shot earlier than 8 weeks. Others say they do, and it should only be for measles and distemper. Still others claim that puppies should wait until they are 10 weeks before they get any vaccines.
Excluding rabies, most core canine disease vaccines are available only as combination vaccines. Manufacturers simply don't make a vaccine that's only for canine distemper and another that's only for canine measles—they are typically combined for both economic and convenience reasons. So, not only do our vets need to be retrained and our laws modified, the vaccine manufacturers may also have to change their products to meet the new standards coming out of this evolving research.
As you can see, there's a lot of change ahead for what we have all taken for granted when it comes to our dogs' basic health. Heading into the new year, do your research, talk to your vet, and give Fido a present he'll really love…a lot fewer shots!
